Principal Investigator: Amanda May
I completed my B.S. degree in chemical sciences at Kansas State University. During my time there, I worked as an undergraduate research assistant in the organic chemistry lab of Dr. Stefan Kraft. In the summers during my time at KSU I worked as an intern at Bayer CropScience in an analytical lab. I started my graduate work at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in synthetic organic chemistry. However, after joining the interdisciplinary lab of Dr. Shawn Campagna, my focus shifted to combining synthetic interests with bioanalytical chemistry to study metabolic effects of quorum sensing molecules on marine microorganisms using liquid-chromatography mass spectrometry-based metabolomics, and I earned my PhD in bioorganic/bioanalytical chemistry. I then completed a post-doctoral appointment in the biochemistry department at Vanderbilt University with Dr. Lawrence Marnett. After a short stint in a clinical lab, I returned to academics as a research associate in the Center for Environmental Biotechnology at the University of Tennessee. In 2022 I began my independent career as a research assistant professor in the Center for Renewable Carbon where I run an environmental chemistry lab focusing on the impact of contaminants on soil and rhizosphere microbe metabolism.
Being from Kansas City I am an avid Chiefs and Royals fan. I enjoy traveling and life on the go while also attending Tennessee sporting events and concerts locally. When staying in I take in all the cuddle time with my three dogs, Paisley, Chesney, and Trent (pictured).
